Magic Johnson shocked the basketball world a few weeks ago when he announced he’d be stepping down from his position as President of Basketball Operations for the Los Angeles Lakers. It marked a continuation of what can only be described as an extremely forgettable season for the legendary purple and gold team.
This season included questions of superstar LeBron James’ possible decline and lack of leadership skills, the rumblings of an Anthony Davis trade that crashed and burned like the Hindenburg, and the missing of playoffs.
Overall, nobody was happy. That included Magic, a former Laker legend.
On Monday, Johnson opened up on ESPN’s First Take about his departure from the team, explaining what really happened and not bothering to hold back on naming people.
Furthermore, he touched on the storyline that everyone wanted to hear about – the potential trade for Davis that never came to, one which is thought of as being a cause of friction in the locker room.
It wasn’t all about the negativity, however. Magic gushed about LeBron’s presence on the team, and he even went as far as saying that LeBron will win a championship with the Lakers.
Part of the reason Magic left was apparently so he could be more open and candid about his opinions, that has certainly held true so far. We’ll see where he goes next as he continues to develop his life away from the Lakers.
