LOS ANGELES -- The Rams have released wide receiver Cooper Kupp, the team announced Wednesday.

The news comes days after the team agreed to sign six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Davante Adams on a two-year deal.

Kupp had said in early February that he was informed by the Rams that "the team will be seeking a trade immediately." In his statement that day, he said, "I don't agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA."

On Wednesday, Kupp reflected on his release, posting to X, "Next chapter starts now. Best is yet to come."

The Rams have designated Kupp a post-June cut, which means they will carry his $29.78 million cap hit until then. Los Angeles will take dead cap hits of $14.78 million in 2025 and $7.48 million in 2026. Kupp's release will save the Rams $15 million in cap space next season.

Kupp, 31, spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Rams, part of head coach Sean McVay's first draft class in 2017. The third-round pick out of Eastern Washington had 62 receptions as a rookie.

"This guy's changed my life," McVay said of Kupp last month on the "Fitz & Whit" podcast. "It's uniquely special because my first year as a head coach coincided with his rookie year. I'm a better human, I'm a better coach and I'm a better person because of the influence Cooper Kupp's had on me. His legacy in my life and as a Ram is cemented forever."

Kupp's best season came in 2021, when he led the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and receiving touchdowns (16). That season he was named to his only Pro Bowl and was the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year.

He capped that season with eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the Rams' Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals, which earned him the game's MVP award.

After the season, Kupp signed a three-year contract extension worth $80.1 million. Kupp has dealt with injuries in the three seasons since then, playing in just 33 games.

In 12 games during the 2024 season, Kupp had 67 catches for 710 yards and six touchdowns.

In his career, Kupp has 634 receptions for 7,776 receiving yards and 58 total touchdowns (57 receiving).
