Earlier this year, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was celebrating his first Super Bowl title with the Kansas City Chiefs. A couple of months later, he found himself working the front lines for the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday night, the 29-year-old guard announced on social media that he’s opting out of his contract for the 2020 NFL season so he can continue to work as an orderly at a long-term care facility.

The Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec native is the first medical school graduate to ever play in the NFL and now he’s using everything he learned to save as many lives as possible.

Duvernay-Tardif also becomes the first NFL player to opt out of the 2020 NFL season.
