When the NFL returns, many players are expected to kneel during the national anthem in protest of racism and police brutality after commissioner Roger Goodell has given the green-light to do so.
Among those kneeling will be second-year Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. Murray was supportive of the Black Lives Matter movement, and hopes his generation can be part of the solution to combat racism.
While initially controversial, public support is beginning to come around on national anthem protests, in light of recent events such as the murder of George Floyd as well as others. Goodell has issued a mea culpa for failing to listen to the messages behind the protests in recent years, and similar protests have also been seen in other sports such as the Premier League.
Murray won’t be the only NFL player to kneel by any means — Adrian Peterson has also said that he plans to kneel, and the first overall pick in the year prior to Murray, Baker Mayfield, said the same in response to a fan’s comment on Instagram.
