The WNBA playoffs are in full swing, and some notable eyes were watching as Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury took on the top-seeded Seattle Storm in what wound up to be a pretty bonkers finish.
Trailing by 16 points as the fourth quarter opened, Diana Taurasi led her team with a barrage of three-pointers to lead the comeback effort. Things culminated at the end of regulation, as Taurasi was able to drain this absurdly contested and off-balance three-pointer to tie the game.
ESPN’s Ryan Ruocco wasn’t the only one to make a bold declaration about Taurasi’s historical standing in that moment. Some of basketball’s all-time greats took to Twitter fingers as well, crowning the 36 year old WNBA legend.
While Taurasi was able to secure overtime, she didn’t get the storybook ending as the Storm would win to go up 2-0 in the best-of-5 series. As far as silver linings go, though, the compliments of Kobe Bryant and Bill Russell have to be pretty high up there.
If you’re curious what Kobe’s been up to over the last little while, by the way, the Black Mamba celebrated his 40th birthday last week. By the looks of things, however, he might as well have been turning 25 — which he was more than eager to point out.
