With 15 minutes of game-play left in the 3rd period, the Toronto Maple Leafs looked to be well on their way to a 3-0 start to the season. A William Nylander goal five minutes into the 3rd put the Buds up 4-1 as the Habs scrambled for answers.

They found them.

A bounce off of Morgan Rielly’s skate awarded Jonathan Drouin a goal, only to be followed a minute later by a Brendan Gallagher tally. All of a sudden it’s a one-goal game.

It still looked like the Leafs may be able to stave off the comeback, but a mistake from Kasperi Kapanen in which he tossed his broken stick towards the feet of Jeff Petry gave the Habs a penalty shot. Petry didn’t miss.

It ended up proving costly, as the Leafs ended up dropping the game 6-5 in a shootout. When asked about the incident, a frustrated Kapanen took full responsibility for not knowing the rule.
