Jonathan Marchessault isn’t satisfied just yet.
Exposed by the Florida Panthers in June’s expansion draft, Marchessault has been on a mission this season to prove his doubters wrong. After scoring 30 goals in the 2016-17 campaign, the 27-year-old responded with 27 goals and 48 assists and played a key role in helping the Golden Knights capture the Pacific Division. The team undoubtedly has plenty to be proud of, but Marchessault made it clear that he and his teammates still have some business to take care of.
Does that sound like a guy who wants to win?
Golden Knights goaltender and Hart Trophy favourite Marc-Andre Fleury made a similar sentiment after eliminating the Winnipeg Jets in the Western Conference Finals. Fleury insisted the hats the players received included one too many words.
What once seemed like a dream has now turned into a reality. Once owning league-low odds of winning the cup at 200-1, Marchessault and the Golden Knights now find themselves four games away from pulling off the unthinkable in their first season. Fans can say all they want about how Vegas’ success has made the NHL look bad, but it shouldn’t take away from what they’ve been able to accomplish this season.
With 8 goals and 10 assists in 15 postseason games so far, Marchessault has arguably been Vegas’ best forward through April and May. Time will tell if he’s able to earn the coveted hat with one less word.
