We’ve come to know Connor McDavid as a one-man dynasty in the NHL’s Fastest Skater competition at All-Star Weekend. He won back-to-back in 2017 and 2018, becoming the first player to win the crown in consecutive years, and then won it again in 2019 to boot. He’ll probably win it again this season.

That is, unless 26-year-old Oilers rookie Joakim Nygard gets the invite. He pulled off a massive upset win against McDavid in the Oilers’ own fastest skater competition on Sunday, beating McDavid’s 14.041-second lap by, we kid you not, the tiniest fraction of a second — Nygard clocked in with a 14.014 lap.

Nygard takes his lap at the 5:55 mark in this video, while McDavid gets the last attempt at the 7:05 mark.

We'll note that in each of his All-Star speed laps, McDavid finished under 14 seconds, so Nygard’s winning lap on Sunday still doesn’t beat McDavid on his best day.

Not beating McDavid’s fastest lap record? Couldn’t be us.
