It’s looking more and more likely that the Dallas Cowboys will be without running back Ezekiel Elliot to kick off the 2019 NFL regular season.

The 24-year-old has been holding out and training in Mexico as he awaits a new contract from team owner and general manager Jerry Jones. The two sides are still in negotiations and Jones admitted that he expects the star running back to miss some regular season action.

Elliot is currently scheduled to earn $12.8 million over the next two seasons ($3.8 and $9 respectively). Despite his absence, Jones is confident that Zeke will not miss the entire season.

But, in true JJ fashion, he made sure to let everyone know who the boss is in Dallas.

Elliot has voiced his displeasure with Jones over the summer, particularly when the latter said “Zeke who?” following Tony Pollard’s breakout performance (42 yards on five carries and a touchdown) against the Los Angeles Rams earlier in the preseason. Elliot called it “disrespectful” and clearly didn’t find any part of it funny.

This doesn’t look to be getting any better with less than a week left until opening kickoff. Dallas will kick off their regular season with a home game against the New York Giants on September 8.
