Oft-injured Troy Tulowitzki hasn’t been in the Blue Jays’ active lineup since July 2017, and the team decided to eat the remaining three years and $38 million on his contract by releasing Tulo in December.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Tulowitzki will sign on a minimum contract with one of the Jays’ division rivals, the New York Yankees. Meanwhile, the Jays will continue to foot the bill on his remaining salary for this season, which comes in at $20 million owed.
It’s safe to say that Jays fans are less than pleased by this development, which is generally being received as a low-risk, high-reward move by the Yankees.
With that said, at least one fan is finding a positive, or at least a joke, in this.
For the Yankees, who have been more prominently linked to superstar shortstop Manny Machado, it’s worth noting that the Tulo signing will not take them out of the running for Machado, according to Passan.
Like many other Jays fans, legendary singer and actress Bette Midler balked at the amount that the team will pay Tulowitzki *not* to play baseball for them.
