Team Canada’s final roster for this year’s World Junior Championships is here, and to say that the team is looking good might be an understatement. The roster looks loaded all the way through, and boasts the most-ever first round NHL draft picks on the same team.
Not bad, to say the least!
It’s hard to call anyone on this wildly elite roster an underdog story, but if you had to tag anyone with the title, it would be the 8th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, Jack Quinn.
To start, the Ottawa, ON, native never played AAA hockey until he was 15 years old, much later than the standard elite player.
Fast forward to World Junior selection camp for Team Canada, and Quinn defied the odds once more. Before last season, Quinn’s best OHL year with his hometown Ottawa 67s saw him score 12 goals and 32 points through 61 games. Nothing to shrug off, but it just makes his breakout season all the more impressive. In 2019-20, Quinn put up 89 points and 52 goals in just one more game than the year before. Put simply, he nearly tripled his point production!
After never being invited to a Hockey Canada camp before this year, Quinn didn’t just make the team; he’s their leading scorer headed into the tournament.
We love a good Cinderella story, and we will definitely be rooting for Jack at this year’s tournament.
