Ryan Kesler will not be playing hockey in the 2019-20 season.
Beyond that? The Anaheim Ducks centre is unsure, but based on his injury history and age (34), he may've well played his final game in the NHL.
The Ducks announced that the former Selke Award winner underwent successful right hip resurfacing surgery last Thursday and will undergo a lengthy recovery.
The former Vancouver Canucks and USA Hockey Olympian released a statement through the Ducks on the process and his outlook going forward.
“At this point in my career, this surgery was the best option for my quality of life,” said Kesler. “The pain I was suffering has been greatly reduced since the procedure, and I’m grateful for that. While my playing future is unknown, I’m in a good place. I want to thank all the doctors and trainers as part of ‘Team Kesler,’ my teammates, my agent Kurt Overhardt, the Ducks organization, the fans, and most importantly, my family, for their support. I’m extremely appreciative of everyone who has helped me through the process. I look forward to spending more time with my family and doing everyday activities without pain.”
Signed for three more years at $6.875 million, the Ducks will likely place Kesler on LTIR to aid in cap relief.
Kesler endured his worst statistical season in 2018-19, potting just 8 points (5 goals, 3 assists) in 60 games and underwent a stretch where he scored only two points in 36 games.
After playing his 1,001st game in the NHL back on March 6, Kesler shut his season with 17 games left in the season.
