What an eventful summer it’s been for Argentine superstar soccer player Lionel Messi.

With rumours that Messi had been at odds with Barcelona FC, whose system he originally joined at just 13 years old, it was considered a real possibility that he had played his last game in a Barca kit. Nobody expected the drama to unfold the way that it did.

News surfaced that Messi had agreed to stay with Barcelona, only to have a completely different story come out not long after. Apparently Barcelona couldn’t come to an agreement with their longtime star, even when Messi offered to cut his salary in half. In the end, Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain on a monster contract that carries an annual salary of approximately $41 million.

If that’s not enough action for one summer, Messi also led the Argentine national team to a championship at Copa America. It was Messi’s first major international championship, which had long been a knock against his place in the GOAT debate.

All that led to a different kind of achievement – the three most liked sports photos on Instagram, ever. All three photos were posted within a one month span.
