We’re not even sure where to begin explaining this one, so we’ll just come out and say it: In his team’s historic 25-4 slapping of the New York Mets, Nationals pitcher Shawn Kelley actually lost his spot on the roster.

Pitching in relief during the ninth inning, Kelley allowed a two-run homer that narrowed the deficit to a mere 21 runs. By that point, the game was so completely meaningless that you wouldn’t have thought that two runs could lead to any kind of lasting repercussions, but hey, Kelley found a way.

In frustration, the pitcher threw his glove to the mound, and because this was “disrespectful to the organization,” the Nationals have designated Kelley for assignment. Really.

Well, that’s one way to keep the team level after a 21-run win. Honestly, regardless of how disrespectful Kelley’s actions may have been to the team or even his manager (he seems to stare down in the direction of his own dugout after the home run), our sympathies go to the guy who lost his job in a 21-run win. Like, man, that sucks.

That was possibly the only source of drama in what was the biggest win in franchise history for the Nationals as well as the worst loss in franchise history for the Mets. Even the Mets’ broadcast team could barely salvage any entertainment value at all, with a live reading of the media guide set to classical music.
