Starting on April 1st, Canadians will now be able to watch the popular documentary “Ice Guardians” on Netflix.
The film is based off an enforcer’s role in hockey, and features several former NHLers speaking on fighting in the game. It looks at the violent role of fighting in the game, and the psychological and physical effect fighting takes on an enforcer inside the game.
While hockey fans are no strangers to chiming in with an opinion if fighting is still relevant in the game, not many people can speak from an enforcer’s perspective. So how did fighting get so popular in the NHL, and what’s truly the point of engaging in a scrap when an outcome of a game is decided by goal differential?
“Ice Guardians” looks at the purpose of it all, and it features Chris Chelios, Bobby Hull, the late Dave Semenko, Kelly Chase, Brett Hull, Gino Odjick, Todd Fedoruk, Riley Cote, Clark Gillies, Rich Tocchet, Zenon Konopka, Eric Godard, Scott Parker, Dave Brown, Glen Cochrane, Kevin Westgarth, Nick Fotiu, Jarome Iginla, Joey Kocur, Steve MacIntyre, Zack Stortini, Wendel Clark, Brett Gallant, Mitch Fritz, Rob Ray, Luke Gazdic, Colton Orr, Dave “The Hammer” Schultz, George Parros and Brian McGrattan. Canadian actor, screenwriter and producer Jay Baruchel also makes an appearance, as well as Howard Bloom, a humane behavior specialist.
Brett Harvey directed the film made by indie filmmaker Adam Scorgie. From the documentary from the film’s website explains what the doc entails.
The documentary runs 1 hour and 48 minutes.
