The overwhelming support of donations to the Humboldt Broncos' GoFundMe page set up for victims and family members that were affected by the horrific bus crash has officially made history.
After surpassing the $1 million organized for the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016, the highest total ever in Canada, the crowd-funding effort has now become the third highest GoFundMe account to ever go live.
As of Tuesday night, the total amount donated for the page set up by Sylvie Kellington was just under $8 million.
Thousands of families and hockey teams (the pledge has received donations from over 100,000 different accounts) all over the world donated money to the fund, including Bauer Hockey, who pledged $15, 000 to the campaign, and changed the front page to allow easy access to those looking to donate to the fund.
GoFundMe CEO Rob Solomon told CTV News Channel on Tuesday that the support for the Broncos and their families has been nothing short of amazing, despite it all coming in severly difficult time.
“This one really struck a chord in Canada and around the world,” Solomon said on Tuesday. “It says to me that people really care about each other and want to help out when these situations happen.”
According to Solomon, the company donated $25,000 to the campaign themselves. Because the amount is so substantial, GoFundMe will send experts who will properly allocate the funds with members of the Broncos organization and Kellington to make sure the money is properly distributed to those that need it the most.
“Especially in situations like this where the amount is so large and unexpected, we really need to figure out how to get the right people to help out the Broncos organization and the organizer.”
The page has the third most donations ahead of the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund ($21 million), with the Las Vegas shooting ($11.8 million) placing second.
