Saturday night marked the end of two great NHL careers, and the hockey world may never be the same for it. After entering the NHL in the 1999 Draft and spending 17 fruitful years with the Vancouver Canucks, Daniel and Henrik Sedin played the final game of their careers in a 3-2 shootout loss to Edmonton Oilers.
Despite the loss, and even despite Connor McDavid’s record-setting night, nothing overshadowed a night that was so clearly the night of the Sedin twins. Next up for them, undoubtedly, is the Hall of Fame.
Around the hockey world, fans celebrated the Sedins on an illustrious pair of careers:
It wouldn't be the final game for the Sedins without their family. #ThankYouSedins pic.twitter.com/Xv2dDnglVF

Congrats on a great career to the Sedins. Two of the best play makers to ever play the game! All the best in retirement.

#ThankYouSedins for being amazing role models to so many young hockey players and showing that greatness on the ice can be accompanied by showing respect, being humble and looking for ways to take care of your teammates. It is our absolute honour to share the hockey rink with you https://t.co/30oIn20z7c

As an Oiler fan, I always hated the Sedins. But the sports kind of hate. Respectful hate. Like how Wes Mantooth feels about Ron Burgundy.

Sad to see them go. Amazing players.

The Sedins are going out in a similar fashion as Markus Naslund. Nazzy was still a good scorer and could have easily player another season at least. It's the same with Henrik and Daniel. #canucks

Gonna be strange watching the Canucks without the Sedins. What a career, and what an impact on not only the NHL, but the sport of hockey in general

As a #Canucks fan I thank the #Oilers and their fans for showing so much love and respect for the #sedins it meant a lot, I will not forget the gracious act of respect shown. I never forgot #Iginla getting all of the #Flames back on the ice after #Lindens last game #respect.

The #Sedins applauding #Oilers fans has got to be one of the classiest moments I’ve seen in the #NHL. LIKE I NEEDED ANOTHER REASON TO CRY TONIGHT. #yeg #yvr #Canucks

I've cried endless tears this week and still don't think it's hit me yet that we won't see the Sedins in a Canucks jersey next season. There aren't enough words to express what you mean to this city! Thank you to the greatest Canucks of all time #ThankYouSedins

I can't believe that we are in an era without Iginla, the Sedins, St. Louis, Datsyuk and etc
— x-arjun (@_marlanderthews) April 8, 2018
& then just to end the day with the last final push of emotion, we watch as Edmonton showers the Sedins with respect and my husband sheds several very real tears over the whole ordeal and it’s all too much pic.twitter.com/xFRHTLBe65

The Sedins mean more the the city of Vancouver than many realize. They mean more to #Canucks fans than anyone who isn't one can understand. #ThankYouSedins for all the amazing memories and for being amazing role models.

I really don’t have words. The Sedins are everything. The Sedins deserve everything. I’ll miss them, but seeing them with their children on the bench is really special. I’m happy for them.
