The Backyard Hockey League is a New Zealand-based hockey league that was created by two Canadians who wanted to provide an authentic brand of Canadian hockey to people in New Zealand. They have a farm league for the BHL called the Frontyard Hockey League, which is basically a summer league for them.
In a recent game between the Les Cones (white) and Les Coqs (Red), something very interesting took place. Les Coqs were awarded a penalty shot during the game, so they decided to let their goalie take it.
If you’re wondering how this is even possible, Reddit user Johkey3 explained that there’s a rule in the league that states if a penalty is committed in the first two periods then the team gets a penalty shot instead of a power play. The team couldn’t decide on a player to take it, so the referee suggested the goalie should take it. Good thing they decided to listen to the referee, because their goalie came up with a big goal.
This isn’t the only interesting rule in the league. If the puck hits the netting and comes back down on the ice it is still considered a live puck, delaying the game results in an icing call and no line changes are allowed during a defensive zone faceoff.
