Despite some challenges with the World Juniors’ health protocols and player availability, Germany had an impressive showing at the World Juniors, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since the format was adopted in 1996.
They weren’t able to defeat Russia, one of the tournament’s favourites, but it was perhaps more competitive than many people thought it would be with a 2-1 final score.

While we’re used to seeing teams like Canada, Russia, Finland and the United States dominate at the WJs, it’s just as exciting to track the growth of emerging programs such as Germany.

You have to be impressed with the play of Tim Stützle in particular, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators, as well with Buffalo Sabres second rounder JJ Peterka. Both players finished with 10 points each in five tournament games, giving fans plenty to be excited about going forward.

Following their quarter-final exit, plenty of hockey fans applauded Germany for their fine showing at the World Juniors. There’s more to come, we’re sure!
