Friday night, Tom Wilson was the NHL player everyone was talking about because of the contract he signed with the Capitals to stay in Washington for six more years.
The money Tom Wilson got is what people have been talking about because he's got a higher cap hit than some big names and doesn't have the same production over the course of his career.
Connor Brown was a 6th round pick by the Leafs in the 2012 while Wilson was selected 16th overall that year by the Capitals. Both players have 35 career goals, but Brown has played in 220 less games than Wilson.
Those numbers perfectly explain why people are ripping the Capitals for re-signing Wilson to the deal they did. That said, he does a number of little things outside of scoring to help the Caps win and he's coming off a career year, so maybe he continues to improve those numbers.
