Captaincy has been a big topic in the NHL over the past year.
Last year, we saw the League’s newest phenom, Connor McDavid, named the youngest captain in NHL history. Since then, the focus has shifted to the Leafs who will not name a captain until at least next season. There’s still talk of Jack Eichel potentially being named captain, Vegas still doesn’t have a captain and the Coyotes are unlikely to name one this season.
The Hurricanes were in that conversation before today, but cleared up their plan with a unique announcement in Raleigh: Jordan Staal and Justin Faulk will be co-captains (Staal at home, Faulk on the road).
There have been situations like this in the past. The first was Ray Bourque and Rick Middleton in 1985-86 with virtually the same set up, doing home/away split between the two players. Despite the precedence, fans don’t seem too pleased with the concept.
Do you like the idea of teams having co-captains?
