We might have found the unofficial BarDown Hockey Dad of the Year.
Over in Downers Grove, Illinois, Chris Vengyl was finding that his 12-year-old son, Nick, loved to play hockey but wasn’t getting enough time on the ice to satisfy his love for the game. So, with the help of a carpenter friend, he decided to build a massive backyard ODR that comes remarkably close to the real thing. ABC 7 Chicago had the full story.
Boasting “full height boards, a warming shed, and a lighting system,” this rink draws kids from the rest of the neighbourhood almost daily, and Vengyl allows them to come and go as they please.
We think the best detail, though, is the fact that Vengyl supplies the rink with several pairs of skates, for any kids that don’t have their own. This guy is the entire neighbourhood’s hockey dad.
For 12-year-old Nick, he can already claim to have a better backyard rink than Aleksander Barkov does.
