Athletes have one goal in mind when they step onto the field, ice or any other playing surface and that’s to come out victorious.

A lot of us were told at a young age that ‘winning isn’t everything’, and while people refuse to believe that, it’s true. We’re not talking about handing out participation trophies, but we are talking about being a good sport.

At the recent Utah cross country state championship race, Riverton High School runner Blake Lewis was nearing the finish line when he heard a bone snap in his leg. That’s when Riverton senior Sean Rausch stepped up.

According to Fox 13, Blake first started feeling a sharp pain in his leg about 400 metres away from the finish line. As he got closer and closer to the finish line, the pain got worse and to the point where his bone snapped midrace.

Rather than going on with the race, Rausch went back for his teammate and tried to carry him the rest of the way, but both runners were disqualified since they’re not allowed to touch or assist other competitors during the race.

Not only did Rausch throw the race just to help out a friend, but he also let Lewis cross the finish line before him and got the loudest ovation from the crowd.
