This year marks the 25th anniversary of the New York Rangers’ last Stanley Cup title and Henrik Lundqvist has found an awesome way to honour the team and one of the key players on the team in Mike Richter.
On Thursday afternoon, the winningest goalie in Rangers franchise history showed off his new mask he’ll debut on Friday night when the Rangers host the Carolina Hurricanes and it’s an incredible tribute to Richter.
Designed by famous goalie mask artist David Gunnarsson, Lundqvist had him recreate Richter’s iconic mask from his time with the Rangers which features the Statue of Liberty on the top and the Rangers wording on the side.
However, rather than have an exact replica of Richter’s mask, Lundqvist and Gunnarsson decided to use the right side of the mask to honour Richter and the Rangers’ last Stanley Cup title.
Richter had himself a career year in 1993-1994 as he went 42-12-6 with five shutouts, a 2.57 goals against average and a .910 save percentage during the regular season, and went 16-7 with four shutouts, a 2.07 goals against average and a .921 save percentage in 23 playoff games.
