Hockey cards are every fan’s favourite thing, and we can all admit to dreaming about pulling a card that ends up making us rich, right?

We’ve all had dreams of ending up with a lucrative card worth a huge sum of dollars, and a lot of the time, the ones that end up being worth a whole lot are rookie cards. You could imagine that star players’ earliest cards are worth the most, and if anyone’s rookie card could make someone rich, you’d have to guess it would be Wayne Gretzky’s.

Just ask Jesse!

Wayne Gretzky holds just about every record in hockey, so it only makes sense that he locks down another one with how much his rookie card is anticipated to go for at an upcoming auction.

Yesterday, the Toronto Star’s Kevin McGran reported that Heritage Auctions has a mint condition 1979 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky rookie card that is expected to become the first-ever hockey card worth a million US dollars. We could only find five sports cards that have ever auctioned for more than a million, all of  them baseball and basketball players. This would be the first hockey card to crack the million dollar mark, and it has a lot to do with the quality.

Apparently, it’s one of only two of these cards that were ranked perfect status for how well they’ve been preserved. Although a considerable amount of these cards exist, few are real, and even fewer are in mint condition.

While there’s no guarantees that it will hit the million dollar mark, apparently, the market for collectables has been high lately. Mark Trout’s Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects Superfractor card with an autograph just broke the record for the most expensive ever on August 23rd, when it auctioned for a whopping $3.9 million.

Will Gretzky’s card make the million dollar mark? Maybe, but in the meantime, we’ll be searching through our old card collections.
