When Gordon Hayward took the court for the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night, he decided to show some support for coronavirus victims in China and abroad with his sneakers.
Hayward, who is signed to Chinese sports apparel company ANTA, wore a custom pair of sneakers against the Utah Jazz; the sneakers depict ancient Chinese gods killing the virus.
Additionally, ANTA has donated $10 million on top of $20 million worth of products to the city of Wuhan, where the virus is believed to have originated.
According to the New York Times, coronavirus has spread to 47 countries and its impact has been felt even in the sports world, with the Tokyo Olympics this summer facing a possible cancellation.
It’s a nice gesture from Hayward and ANTA to use their platform against the cause. With that said, it seems like the fans in Utah are still harbouring some ill feelings against Hayward from his decision to leave for Boston in free agency — all the way back in 2017! — because he was hearing the boo birds every time he touched the ball.
