For the casual observer, it may seem as though it is a requirement for star NFL receivers to have a certain level of “Diva” in their personality. It is all too often we hear receivers complaining about their usage, their quarterbacks, their coaches, or even the fans. While this mentality certainly doesn’t apply to every receiver, the squeaky wheels are the loudest.
Saying that, sometimes being outspoken is rewarding. Last year, Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen each had something to say about Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins directly before having a fantastic game, and even from this week Marquise “Hollywood” Brown complained about his usage, to which quarterback Lamar Jackson agreed and vowed to try to get him more involved.
For New York Giants receiver Golden Tate, his public criticism went the exact opposite direction.
Tate has made some waves this week after cameras caught him screaming “THROW ME THE BALL” after his clutch touchdown late on Monday.
This wasn’t all that happened, though. His wife also shared out her own irritations with Tate’s lack of usage.
On top of all this, Golden Tate liked a tweet suggesting the Giants cut Tate so he can have an opportunity elsewhere. Overall, it’s clear he’s pretty unhappy. In fact, he was spotted on the scout team during Friday’s practice, playing the role of Washington wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
With the Giants going nowhere this season, and also containing other target-demanding skill players like Darius Slayton, Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why Tate hasn’t been shining through the struggles of quarterback Daniel Jones. Even so, it would be frustrating to believe in yourself so much, only to not be given an opportunity.
