The hit film Dodgeball, staring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, popularized a joke in the sports community by referencing a channel that would air dodgeball championships called “The Ocho”.
The channel was basically a joke about how much coverage ESPN is able to provide and today it became a reality. In the past, the reference was basically for any beer league scrubs that scored a nice goal in pick-up, maybe they could end up on the Ocho (This joke was kind of before social media, and now that’s basically the internet). Still, for one day only, on August 8th (8/8), ESPN has made the fictional channel a reality and filled it with unusual sports coverage.
Here’s their full lineup.
Perhaps the most popular event so far, aired today at 4am: Trampoline Dodgeball.
Dodgeball will make its return to The Ocho tonight at 5pm ET, at the Moxie Games – or atleast there will be a variation of it. Here’s their description of the event:
Moxie Games: An uncanny, new and amazing event which combines a variety of sports into one, such as dodgeball and juggling, martial arts and volleyball, and table tennis and soccer.
That’s a lot of sports to combine, and while we have never seen anything like it before, the video below may be a sneak peek at what we can expect. On the YouTube channel Skill Convention there is a montage of a competition that looks somewhat what is being described in above, give or take a couple sports.
Still, with the events that are already underway, fans are thrilled with the unusual sports for the day.
