Erica Wheeler’s journey to the All-Star Game is a remarkable one. She was undrafted out of Rutgers in 2013, and it took her until 2016 to find a home in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever. Taking a star turn this year, Wheeler was named a WNBA All-Star — and then she was named the WNBA All-Star Game’s MVP, with 25 points and a record-tying seven threes.
It’s the first time that an undrafted player has ever been named the WNBA All-Star Game MVP, and Wheeler dedicated her performance to her late mother in a highly emotional post-game interview.
Get the tissues ready, folks. Even the players on the court couldn't hold back tears!
As far as exhibition games like these go, it’s pretty freaking cool to see moments like these for a career grinder such as Wheeler. Plus, that dagger three to seal the game wasn’t half bad, either!
On the other side of things, Canadian WNBAer Kia Nurse finished with 15 points for Team Elena Della Donne, a night after participating in the All-Star three point contest.
