Dustin Johnson is finally the King of Canada. Or at least, one of them.
The World’s #1 golfer absolutely destroyed the field with a no-doubt final round at The Glen Abbey Golf Club. In the end, DJ finished -23, just two strokes shy of the tournament record. While the Canadian Open may not have the same level of prestige as some other events, and certainly doesn’t have the glitz and glam of a major, it held a special place for Johnson in the way of his Canadian ties.
Dustin Johnson is married to Paulina Gretzky, the daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. While this may not mean quite as much elsewhere, in Canada DJ is basically royalty. While he was accepting his well-deserved trophy, Johnson made sure to credit Gretzky for his wide-spread support around Canada and during the Canadian Open.
It’s not the first time the two have been directly associated during the tournament (as you would likely expect). DJ even flashed a Gretzky jersey as he teed off at one point.
The two superstars in their sport have a mutual respect for each other, and DJ’s dominant Canadian Open win will certainly win a few brownie points with his legendary father-in-law.
