,PITTSBURGH -- Wide receiver DK Metcalf said he was "ecstatic" when he got word Sunday night that he would soon be a Steeler.
The former Seattle Seahawks second-round pick, whom Pittsburgh acquired along with a 2025 sixth-round pick in exchange for 2025 second- and seventh-round picks, said Thursday that he immediately felt welcomed by the organization as the trade unfolded this week.
"Coach [Mike] Tomlin, Mr. Omar [Khan] and Mr. [Art] Rooney all hopped on the phone with me Sunday, and it just felt homey, felt welcoming that they wanted to bring me to this historic organization," Metcalf said at his introductory news conference. "Everything just snowballed from there and brought me here in front of you today."
Although Metcalf doesn't know who his quarterback will be, as the Steelers await Aaron Rodgers' decision, the 27-year-old didn't express any trepidation about signing a five-year, $150 million contract with the organization following the trade.
"They made me feel like they had the right decision with who was going to be throwing me the football," Metcalf said of his conversation with Tomlin, Khan and Rooney. "I'm not making the decision in the quarterback room, so I'm just going to try to do the best of my abilities to help whoever they have out there throwing the football. They make the correct decisions to bring the quarterback in here. So I'm just going to roll with that."
Although he figures to be a cornerstone of the Steelers' offense for the foreseeable future, Metcalf said it's not up to him to make a recruiting pitch to Rodgers or any other free agent quarterbacks who might be interested in Pittsburgh.
"This is a historic organization," Metcalf said. "They've done the recruiting before I even got here, so whoever wants to come here and try to win as many games as we can, they can join us. But if not, good luck on the other side."
Known for his physicality and stature, Metcalf said he was excited to play in the rough-and-tumble AFC North, as Tomlin stood nearby, nodding and smiling at his newest offensive playmaker.
"I'm a physical receiver, big shoutout to my pops, who was the O-lineman in this league for a little bit," Metcalf said. "He instilled that in me, and I just try to play the game a different way. God blessed me with the talents and with this opportunity, so I'm not going to take it for granted."
Metcalf joins a wide receiver corps that includes George Pickens. Like Pickens, Metcalf previously wore No. 14, but he switched to No. 4 in Pittsburgh.
"I mean he's been here, he's made a staple in the No. 14," Metcalf said. "I'm not trying to take away from anybody's legacy, just trying to help build mine."
Metcalf said he talked with Pickens only in passing but that he was looking forward to joining forces and navigating a dynamic in which both players want the ball.
"Great player watching from afar," Metcalf said of his impressions of Pickens. "The receiver coach calls him 'Freak Show,' and I think that's a fitting name for him with the circus catches that he makes. But I'm just here to try to instill any wisdom or any knowledge that he allows me to and vice versa."
Not only did the Steelers make a significant commitment to Metcalf this week, but the wide receiver also made his own long-term commitment to girlfriend Normani. Metcalf said he proposed to the Fifth Harmony alum surrounded by their families in Houston on Wednesday.
After proposing, Metcalf called quarterback Russell Wilson. The two were teammates in Seattle, and Wilson and his wife, Ciara, introduced Metcalf and Normani. Metcalf said he didn't talk to Wilson, who visited the Cleveland Browns and is set to visit the New York Giants, about the future of the onetime Steelers quarterback.
"He was just telling me congratulations," Metcalf said. "But last year, I think halfway through the season, me and Russ had a conversation about how it was living here, and he just told me that I would love it here, and I'm waiting to find that out."
Metcalf was almost at a loss for words trying to describe a week that began with a blockbuster trade and massive extension and continued with an engagement a few days later.
"Great," he said, grinning and shaking his head. "I mean, I don't know too many more words other than great.
"It is just a big blessing just to come to a new home, not discrediting anything from the Seahawks organization because they gave me a chance to become who I am in this league, and I just thank them for that. But I found a new home here, found a new fiancée, and everything's just falling in line, just the way God planned for it to be, and I'm just excited to continue to move forward with it."
