The rebuilding Ottawa Senators were able to offload Dion Phaneuf’s contract in February, shipping the blueliner — who will be paid $7 million each year through 2021 — to the Los Angeles Kings. However, as part of the trade, they agreed to pay a portion of Phaneuf’s salary.

Because of that, Phaneuf will actually be paid more by the Sens ($1.75 million) than any of the Sens’ own defensemen in Saturday’s game between Ottawa and Los Angeles.

What!? 😂😂

Cody Ceci, who makes $4.3 million per year, is the Sens’ highest-paid defenseman, but he currently sits on injured reserve and won’t be playing against the Kings. After Ceci is Mark Borowiecki, who leads the rest of the defense with his $1.2 million salary.

Money isn’t everything, though! At the time of writing, the Sens already hold a 2-0 lead in the first period with a goal coming from one of those defenseman making less than Phaneuf, Chris Wideman.
