This past weekend, the 143rd Kentucky Derby took place, and as always, it was very exciting.

There's just something about the atmosphere and history of the event that makes it entertaining.

Sure, the race doesn't last longer than five minutes, but the Derby is so much bigger than the actual race itself.

Now, there are probably many things the average sports fan doesn't know about horse racing, but this fact might be the craziest, every horse racing in the Kentucky Derby had the same birthday.

And down the stretch they come!! #KyDerby

In fact, every Thoroughbred horse born in the Northern Hemisphere has the same birthday, January 1st, and every Thoroughbred horse born in the Southern Hemisphere has the universal birthday of August 1st, as per How Stuff Works.

One of the reasons Thoroughbred horses are given universal birthdays is to make it easier for racing purposes.

For example, the Kentucky Derby is only open to three-year-olds, so every horse that competed in the race was born between January and May of 2014, as per Bustle.

The old saying, "You learn something new every day", applies here, so feel free to share this knowledge with your friends and brag about it or keep it to yourself.

Either way, the next time a horse race comes around and you notice every horse has the same birthday, you'll know why.
