When Deryk Engelland decided to hang up the skates and call it a career, he probably wasn’t expecting to get behind another hockey bench so soon.
Well, with the Henderson Silver Knights’ coaching staff recently jumping behind the bench for the Vegas Golden Knights after their staff was added to the COVID list, Engelland was behind the bench for the Silver Knights’ preseason game on Friday night filling in as their head coach.
The regular coaches were in attendance watching the game, but due to COVID protocol they aren’t able to return behind the bench just yet. Luckily for them, they had a former NHLer player around the corner ready to fill in.
Engelland ran practice earlier this week, so he wasn’t thrown into the role out of the blue, but he probably wasn’t expecting to make a coaching debut this soon after calling it a playing career. At least he walked away with the victory in his debut!
