The NBA Draft is this Thursday, and the Phoenix Suns hold the first overall pick. It’s an exciting time for fans of the franchise, as they’ll soon find out which young player the franchise will entrust with its... Oh, never mind. It turns out we’re well past that part.
Suns fans have already taken to buying jerseys with Deandre Ayton’s name emblazoned on them—obviously, the team hasn’t started selling them yet, but so goes the miracle of custom jerseys—and we’re at the stage where Ayton feels comfortable putting his name on it.
To be fair, it’s been a bit of an open secret that the Suns have zeroed in on Ayton as their pick early on in the process, after Slovenian guard Luka Dončić dropped out of consideration. That doesn’t mean it’s official, so things could change... But, you know, they probably won’t.
Fans hoping for drama in the NBA Draft have little to worry about, however, as the Sacramento Kings will be the fulcrum of the draft with the second pick. The latest reports have connected them to Duke’s Marvin Bagley, but Dončić would theoretically be on the board and they were also linked to Missouri’s Michael Porter. Mostly, though, they’re the Kings and they could do anything.
At any rate, it’s at least encouraging for Suns fans that they have an incoming player (unofficially!) who is excited to join the team. The team sure could use it, after the tumult of their season which saw star point guard Eric Bledsoe traded and head coach Earl Watson fired after this candid tweet from Bledsoe.
