David Ayres has had a whirlwind of a week. After subbing into an NHL game as an emergency goalie for the Carolina Hurricanes, and beating the Toronto Maple Leafs in the process, Ayres has been through A LOT. His media itinerary was absolutely jam packed, and it included a visit to The Today Show on NBC.
This one was particularly special because of the surprise guest they had lined up.
Ayres’ mom Mary joined the broadcast to the shock of her son. She explained just how proud she was, and the moment was quick to draw tears from David’s eyes. You could tell how astounded he was, and it’s hard not to love a moment like that.
Ayres mom can be credited with an assist on the Canes win, she actually saved his life once upon a time by donating a kidney when he needed it. That’s even more special than defeating the hockey capital of the world.
