It’s been almost a week since David Ayres heroically took over the Carolina Hurricanes’ crease in the NHL’s latest emergency backup situation. He earned the win over the Toronto Maple Leafs as a result, and since then it’s been a whirlwind for the Toronto Marlies facilities worker.

From media availability, to becoming an honourary North Carolinian, to sounding the horn to begin the Hurricanes’ game in Raleigh, he’s been just about everywhere this week.

Now, in possibly the biggest honour of all, a piece of his performance will forever be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The HHoF announced that David Ayres’ goal stick will be entered into the Hall on Friday, February 28th. As part of the media release, it’s explained that he is the first emergency backup to record a win, while also becoming the oldest goaltender to win in their NHL debut.

Legend.
