Well, that was quick.
It took just four games for the Edmonton Oilers to get bounced from the playoffs and with the early departure comes a boatload of questions. What’s next for this team, and more importantly… will Connor McDavid ask for a trade? McDavid, 24, just wrapped up his sixth season and has just a single playoff series win to his name, so, logically, people are starting to question whether he wants out of the historic franchise. But low and behold, that simply is not the case.
During his season-ending presser, the NHL’s soon to be Hart Trophy winner insisted that he wants to stay in Edmonton, touching on the team’s “great core” and wanting to “see it through together.” So guess we can all go ahead and put those rumours to sleep!
McDavid wasn’t there either, and believes the team is capable of finding another gear.
Edmonton’s issue, as has been the case every season during the McDavid era, has plain and simply been depth. Behind he and his partner in crime Leon Draisaitl, Behind the two (105 and 84 points respectively), Edmonton’s next highest scoring forward during the regular season was Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with… 35. The duo’s combined 64 goals made up roughly 35% of the Oilers’ entire goal total (183). Edmonton finished second in the North division with a 35-19-2 record.
McDavid is signed through the 2025-26 season and it’s safe to say this is a big offseason in Oil Town. What do you think the Oilers should do?
