Recently, the conversation around racism in hockey has flared up. When Akim Aliu opened up about some of the problems he had encountered for no reason other than the colour of his skin, others including Evander Kane, J.T. Brown, and P.K. Subban also came forward to support.

Now, with the death of George Floyd sparking outrage all across the world, the conversation is louder than ever. One of the criticisms towards the hockey world was that there was a lack of support shown from Caucasian players, and that’s begun to change.

Following suit with Logan Couture and Blake Wheeler, Connor Carrick is the latest to speak out against the underlying racisms in both hockey and the greater situation. In a typed out note, Carrick acknowledges some of the issues and the need for change.

Over the past few days, it’s become abundantly more clear that there is an unrest, and a dramatic need for change. Carrick may still be among the first, but there are likely more to come as well.
