American golfer Collin Morikawa joined the history books on Sunday when he became the second golfer ever to win a PGA Tour Major and a World Golf Championship event before the age of 25.
The only other golfer to do so was likely watching from a hospital bed.
In the first event since Tiger Woods’ devastating car crash that left him severely injured, the ripple effect of his legacy was very apparent. Tribute was paid to one of the game’s all-time greats in a number of ways, most notably by all the red shirts worn by other golfers.
Once the 18th hole had collected its final ball, it was Morikawa who claimed victory. Speaking with the Golf Channel, Morikawa took the opportunity to sincerely thank Tiger and his late grandfather. Morikawa struggled to hold back tears as the interview wrapped up.
Morikawa’s sentiment is one that has been echoed throughout the golf world over the past week, and it seems like Woods truly appreciates it. Following the event, Woods tweeted his gratitude to all those that have helped him through the early aftermath of his crash.
Get well soon, Tiger!
