This one will surely make your heart ache, but in a good way.
Travis Boyd is a 24-year-old centre with Washington Capitals organization currently playing on the team’s AHL farm team, the Hershey Bears.
The Bears were in action on Friday night, and boy was Boyd playing with a heavy heart. The Minnesota native recorded a career high four goals in the game for his second career AHL game in the Bears 6-3 win over the Laval Rocket, the Montreal Canadiens’ AHL affiliate.
After the game, Boyd tweeted a pair of photos out regarding the health of his daughter, Hayden.
According to Russian Machine Never Breaks, Boyd told the Bears play-by-play voice Zack Fisch that his daughter had a bad throat infection and needed emergency surgery to have it removed.
“It actually started after the game last Sunday against Rochester. I went straight from the rink to Urgent Care and then from Urgent Care to the ER. Never left the hospital until Friday morning,” Boyd told Fisch. “We had a successful surgery on Thursday night. Basically just a bad infection in her throat that had to be surgically removed. They had to surgically go in and kind of remove the bacteria and drain out the fluids. Everything went well. She’s doing well.”
For Boyd to go out and lead his team to a victory, if that doesn’t exemplify character, then we’re not sure what does.
“It was a long week, but really just quite unbelievable that I was able to go out and score four goals after the week I had and after everything that, not just myself, but my girlfriend and Hayden went through. A memorable night and so happy and ready to get back to it here.”
“There is definitely a higher power that was helping me last night. Truly crazy and definitely a night I will never forget.”
All the best to the Boyd family, and we wish nothing but a speedy recovery for little Hayden.
