The trial of former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin reached a verdict on Tuesday, with Chauvin being found guilty of all three charges in the murder of George Floyd. The verdict brought a wave of emotion through the sports world, a community which was very outspoken over the past year, particularly surrounding the death of Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others.
When the verdict came back guilty, the Twitter Sphere immediately filled up with reactions. We also got to hear some reflection from around the sports world following the initial wave.
During the NBA on TNT broadcast, Candace Parker and Dwyane Wade discussed the verdict. They expressed their relief, but also their mindset moving forward. We’re not there yet.
Not done yet.
This is the sentiment that was echoed throughout the world of sports and beyond on Tuesday. TSN football analyst Jabari Greer also mentioned the need to stay the course, believing that the small semblance of hope was good, but not enough.
He also discussed the importance of athletes continuing to speak out. While the “stick to sports” mantra is one that won’t seem to go away, Greer discusses the platform entertainers have, and how it does make a difference.
The trial of Derek Chauvin is a small step, but it’s a step in the right direction. Keep it going.
