Who says referees aren’t athletes?
While Garrett Rank, an NHL referee from Elmira, Ontario, is used to officiating the action, he will be participating as an athlete in a completely different sport. Golf.
Rank is an amateur golfer that has competed in 15 different USGA championships before, so it’s not like this is totally out of left field. He’s played in the Canadian Open as well, and even won the Canadian mid-amateur, but his most impressive feat is his most recent. After finishing a co-medalist in regional qualifying, Rank has earned a spot in the US Open ranks.
Rank joins Adam Hadwin and Mackenzie Hughes as the only Canadians currently qualified for the major tournament. To learn more about the impressive sporting balance Rank is showing, here is a Bob McKenzie story on the Elmira native.
