When it comes to international hockey, respect and pride shine through more than any other qualities. It’s a showcase, and it’s competitive, but it also works to bring the world together over one simple thing – the love for hockey.
With handshake lines and anthem ceremonies after each game, it’s clear how important it is for these young stars to represent their country. Unfortunately, it can also lead to some drama, as it did following the Canada vs. Russia game early in the tournament.
The Russians were unhappy that Canadian captain Barrett Hayton kept his helmet on during the anthem, interpreting it as disrespect. Following the controversy, Hayton reached out via a statement apologizing for any disrespect that was felt as a result.
This will likely be the end of the matter, as it’s clear there was no ill-intent on Hayton’s part. Despite it being an oversight, a rematch between these two teams may have a little extra passion behind it…
