The two most important things when it comes to being a mascot are to always show the crowd a good time and to never reveal your true identity. While a majority of people who watch sports know that there’s a human inside the costume, it could be a pretty traumatizing for a young child to see a character’s head fall off.

This weekend, the BYU Cougars hosted the McNeese State Cowboys and their mascot, Cosmo, had an in-game stunt backfire on him and put him through every mascot’s worst nightmare.

In the middle of the flip Cosmo’s head went flying off in front of thousands of fans, but the person underneath the costume did not hesitate to cover his face and neither did the surrounding staff members who rushed to his side to give him back his head.

Cosmo’s true identity was not revealed by the mishap and the Cougars went on to crush the Cowboys 30-3, so almost everyone went home happy.
