The first ever Fortnite World Cup was held this weekend in New York City, bringing together the gaming world’s best to compete in the wildly popular battle royale game.
The turnout was stunning, and there was even a concert by electronic artist Marshmello to kick things off, but there may be no better sign that business is booming for Fortnite than the prize money on the line: $3 million buckaroos, ultimately won by 16-year-old Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf in the Solos final.
How about that? Winning the Fortnite World Cup earns you prize money on par with lower-level salaries in other, time-tested professional sports, which is probably a good sign that this thing will be around to stay.
And, if you’ve ever played Fortnite — or maybe even if you haven’t! — you can see these plays by Bugha are seriously something impressive. In the end, it wasn’t even close. Bugha finished with 59 points to second place finisher Psalm’s 33.
