Draft Day is always exciting when you have a high 1st round pick, as the Toronto Blue Jays did. For the first time in over 20 years, the Jays were drafting in the top five with the 5th overall pick. Last time they drafted in the 5-hole, they got Vernon Wells.
Even though they knew they were going to get a good player, not many expected them to score Austin Martin – a 3rd baseman who can also play outfield and just about anywhere.
Martin was one of the highest-touted prospect in this year’s draft class. Almost considered a lock to go in the top three, Jays fans everywhere felt pretty darn good about scoring him. As is the way with Toronto sports fans, though, the question became “does he want us as much as we want him?”
In both the NBA and the MLB, fans are used to hearing about how star players don’t want to come to Toronto. While it seems that the winds have changed a bit in recent years, die-hard Toronto fans have it so deeply ingrained in them that “ahhh, this guy probably doesn’t want to be here.”
For that reason, Jays fans will feel pretty good about Austin Martin’s recent interview, in which he explained Toronto was one of his top two choices alongside, understandably, his home city of Miami.
The little giddy smile at the beginning is enough to give Jays fans… well… a little giddy smile. Nothing like a young, promising squad that really wants to be north of the border!
