The past week has been extremely difficult to say the least, and it's become abundantly clear that there is a need for change right now. Hockey is a sport that has faced adversity in the past for not properly confronting racial issues, it is one community where change is drastically needed.
One important way of doing that is to celebrate the organizations that deserve a spotlight for the incredible work they've been doing. One of those organizations is the Black Girl Hockey Club.
For nearly two years, the BGHC has been heavily involved in advocating for black involvement at the grassroots level in hockey. They're helping to fight stigmas around coloured girls getting involved in hockey, and supporting those that do as they grow and develop as players.
Renee Hess and the team at BGHC have worked hard to forward resources and vital information to followers. They have been active in the growing the conversation every day, and on Thursday, June 4th, Hess will be leading an important discussion on Instagram Live to do with race and hockey.
Since the initial announcement, the chat has received lots of support. It was also announced that Saroya Tinker of the NWHL’s Metropolitan Riveters would be joining the discussion.
