The Cleveland Cavaliers may be in the midst of a battle for seeding in the Eastern Conference, but fans around the league are already looking forward to LeBron James’ upcoming free agency in the summer. A Philadelphia-based company named Power Home Remodeling has purchased three billboards in Cleveland to recruit LeBron to the 76ers.
After the last few years of stockpiling assets and young players, the 76ers have finally begun to compete with a talented young core, and a second billboard visualizes this by adding LeBron’s jersey number alongside the numbers of current 76ers Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Dario Saric and Robert Covington. (No love for 2017 first overall pick Markelle Fultz? Yikes.)
By all accounts, the possibility of LeBron heading to Philly seems real. The 76ers have the cap space to offer a $35 million maximum contract to LeBron in his first year, and the opportunity to play with future stars in Embiid and Simmons should be at least somewhat appealing. Rumours that 76ers GM Bryan Colangelo plans to recruit LeBron as a free agent have circulated since November.
It may be hard to imagine the 76ers jumping to title contention so quickly, but they’re already a playoff team, and their young core is set to grow rapidly in the next few years. They look like a good team as things stand, and maybe that can persuade LeBron to hop on board and make them a great team.
Seriously, imagine a LeBron, Embiid, Simmons, Saric and Covington lineup. That’s a unit where LeBron, at 6-8, would be the shortest guy on the floor, with two generational passers (LeBron and Simmons), a unicorn (Embiid) and a pair of versatile two-way wings (Saric, Covington). Could you turn that down?
