That’s a wrap on 2019 for Bianca Andreescu. On Friday, she withdrew from her season-ending WTA Finals match against Elina Svitolina on Friday due to a left knee injury; Svitolina lost to Ashleigh Barty in Sunday's final.
After entering the event with a No. 4 ranking, Andreescu will fall to No. 5 in the year-end rankings. While maybe not the finish to the season that she wanted, it hardly detracts from a historic year for the 19-year-old from Mississauga, and she made sure to thank her fans for the support this year.
Andreescu claimed her first two Premier titles at the Indian Wells Open and the Canadian Open, before shocking the world with a win over Serena Williams at the U.S. Open. Not bad for someone who entered the year with a No. 152 ranking, right?
With losses at the China Open and the WTA Finals in her final two tournaments of the season, Andreescu will take a minor slide instead of reaching her goal for a top-three ranking this year. Yeah, we think she’ll be just fine, though.
This year, she became the highest-ranking Canadian in tennis history. What does 2020 hold in store?
